Preparation

I've spent a good two hours tonight creating this:

It's a color card for my Oregon vest. Can you imagine how awful it would be if I lost track of which color is which? I shudder to think of it.

Each skien came with a beautiful little card attached to it that had its color name. As you can see, the names are very imaginative and poetic, but not necessarily descriptive. Red deer is red, which is good, but sea ivory is green which bad. Golden plover is golden (good), Erica is purple (bad). And don't get me started on Selkie versus Kelpie!

As I wound each skien I removed its little tag and attached it to a zip lock baggie, into which I placed the yarn cake. I've heard that it is not good to store wool in air tight bags, but as I intend to start this soonest, I don't think it will do any harm.

I found a Knit Along that I just had to join, Fair Isle February. Seems like fate doesn't it? Well, God is in the details and I'd like as much help with this project as I can get. A little divine intervention couldn't hurt.

  1. Don't worry! There are quite a few of us who'll be able to help you identify the colours if you lose the card.

First kit I purchased, I replaced the string on the card with the corresponding yarn.

    Love that Autumn colourway!

You are so organized! I think of good ideas like that but rarely implemnt them.

    Fair Isle February - tempting.

Oh Laurie - I can't wait to watch this vest grow....The autumn colorway is gorgeous!
Just having all those little baggies with the pretty colored yarn would make me happy!

  4. The only problem you might have with sealed plastic bags at this point is if you leave them in the back seat of the car on a hot day and they sweat and felt just a bit. Not likely with clean yarn.

I do avoid putting unspun silk fiber in a sealed plastic bag because it can clot at the slightest change in humidity/heat.

Since WIP's are more likely to be harmed by spills and being dropped, I think the bags are a great idea! --syl

  5. Love your little card and I think that is clever! I used cards like that for my cross stitching and petit point! Saved my sanity more than once!

  7. What a great idea! I should do that with my evening shawl since the chart indicates a color name and the ball bands only give me a number.
